If you are a truck driver, you probably know that there are a lot of things you need to keep in your rig in order to be safe on the road. From your logbook to your DOT Inspection, there are many items that are required by law. However, there are also a few items that are not required by law but are essential for every driver.

In this article, we will discuss the items that you should keep in your commercial vehicle in order to be safe and prepared for anything. We will also provide a list of resources that you can use to help you stay safe on the road.

Documents

  1. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or appropriate license

  2. Medical Certificate

    •       Inspector should be able to access it through the database but if they can't it is good to have

  3. Valid Registration for Truck and Trailer

  4. Periodic Inspections (Truck & Trailer) 

  5. Motor Carrier Authority Certificate

  6. Apportioned Cab Card

  7. Bill of Lading or other shipping documents

  8. Any receipts obtained during the trip (scale, fuel, toll, etc)

  9. Information required for hazardous materials being transported (e.g. shipping papers, permits, route plan, etc., if applicable)

  10. State Authority (If Applicable)

  11. State Cab Card (If Applicable)

  12. Proof of Insurance

  13. Records of Duty Status (RODS)

  14. Logbook device manual if ELD

  15. Paper logs (backup)

  16. IFTA License - this is in addition to the IFTA stickers placed on the truck

  17. Safety Certificates (If Applicable)

  18. Lease Agreement (If Applicable)

  19. IFTA Sticker Affixed to the truck

  20. State Permits (NM, KY, NY, OR, CT)

Safety Equipment Required (49 CFR Part 393.95)

  1. Extra Fuses

  2. Fire Extinguisher (at least Class 5 B:C)

  3. Hazard Triangles

  4. Flares or similar lighting device

  5. Proper signage on the vehicle

Personal Safety and Comfort

  1. Non-perishable snacks and water bottles

  2. Blanket and weather-appropriate clothing

  3. Sunglasses and Sunscreen: To protect against UV rays while driving.

  4. Comfortable Seating Cushion: To reduce the strain of sitting for long hours.

  5. Noise-Canceling Headphones or Earplugs: For better rest during breaks.

  6. Emergency Contact List: Including family, friends, and roadside assistance numbers.

  7. Personal Medication and First Aid Supplies: For handling minor ailments or emergencies.

  2. Reflective vest

  3. Steel toe boots/shoes

  4. Flashlight

  5. Flashlight batteries

  6. Essential tools for minor repairs

  7. Wheel Chocks(2)

  8. First Aid Kit (Some States mandate)

  9. Wet Wipes

  10. Tire Pressure Gauge

  11. Tire Thumper
